GRAND RAPIDS -- Dr. Patrik Brundin, the Swedish scientist recruited to lead Van Andel Institute's research into Parkinson's disease, is recognized internationally as an authority on the disease. Patrik Brundin sat in another room peering through a microscope and dissecting the fetal tissue. In the new Parkinson center at the Van Andel Research Institute, Brundin is planning to recruit around 10 new Parkinson research group leaders and organizing them into three clusters.

He has 35 years of experience studying neurodegenerative diseases, Parkinson’s disease pathogenesis and therapeutic neural transplantation into people with Parkinson’s. The Van Andel Institute, an independent research and educational organisation dedicated to expanding the frontiers of medical science, has appointed Dr Patrik Brundin inaugural holder of the Jay Van Andel endowed chair in Parkinson research. Dr Brundin is an expert in the field of Parkinson's and neurodegenerative disease research, and is currently professor of neuroscience at the Faculty of (3)Center for Neurodegenerative Sciences, Van Andel Research Institute, Grand Rapids, MI, United States.

His research focuses on pathogenic mechanisms of Parkinson’s as well as the development of therapies that slow or stop disease progression or that Dr. Patrik Brundin is the director of Van Andel Research Institute’s Center for Neurodegenerative Science. He earned his Ph.D. in 1988 and M.D. in 1992, both from Lund University, and is one of the top cited researchers in the field of neuroscience with more than 350 publications on Parkinson’s disease and related topics.
